Competition Themes 2023

During 2023 we challenge our members with six (6) competitions throughout the year and an "End Of Year" competition at year's end.

As always, members are encouraged to take photos for the purpose of entering the competition rather than trawling their catalogue for images that match the set theme. The purpose of the competitions is to inspire creativity and to challenge members to produce quality images for the purpose of entry. With each set subject we will also include an Open category pool. In the open category you are permitted to enter any image for consideration.

In 2023 we are continuing with digital only entries for club competitions, however, for some inter club competitions prints are required and encouraged.

1. Monochrome

An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no colour (i.e. contains only shades of grey which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a greyscale image that has been toned in one colour across the entire image. (For example, by Sepia, red, gold, etc.) A greyscale or multi-coloured image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi-toning or by the inclusion of spot colouring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Colour Work (Definition via the  APJA).

3. Blur/Panning

Blur: Intentional blur to convey movement.  Panning: Method of moving the camera in line with a moving subject such as a racing car. This produces a blurred background but keeps the subject sharp, thereby giving a greater effect of movement in the final image.

6. Portraiture

An image of a living person that accurately represents their anatomical features in which the face or profile is predominant. The intent is to meaningfully reproduce the recognizable appearance, personality, character, mood or qualities of the person or group of people. It is not just a recording or ‘snapshot’ and its purpose is to memorialize an image of someone for the future. There are essentially four approaches to portraiture:

  1. Constructionist (Maybe studio based where the photographer builds an idea or theme around the portrait to communicate about the person, for example, a musician in action)
  2. Candid (These are observational images of the moment, rely on ambient light and the person is unaware the image is being made)
  3. Environmental (Shows the surrounding living conditions and reveals a lot about the person)
  4. Inventive (Imaginative but true to reality where post-production manipulation is used)

Experimental, as distinct to inventive, where human features are not distinguishable such as a disguise, pretence, simulation or fabrication of a human face do not qualify as portraits. (APJA)
