White Night Melbourne 2014

White Night Melbourne 2014 was massive. Reportedly 500,000 people made their way into city and packed themselves into the space of several city blocks to experience the light shows on display, the live performances and the other events going on throughout the city. Around 10 of us met up at Federation Square while others ventured out on their own.

White Night Melbourne is a cultural event during which the city comes alive in light projections and displays, live performances and theatre pieces. It was a sea of people, in which some of us feared drowning.

After hanging around the Fed Square stage watching the dancing, waiting for the sun to go down we made our way to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). The NGV's outer walls were display boards for "Tattooed City" a projected display of tattoos on people and tattoo designs.

The group then ventured over to Alexandra Gardens where there were video screens set up showing short art pieces and gave some a good vantage point to capture the light projections from Birrarung Marr.

At this point the group split up and made their separate ways. I personally don't do well in big crowds so my night came to an early end. Others report they were still walking around at 4am the next morning!

Word is next year this might become a two night event, I'm not sure this will make things better, but we'll see. Next year I'm thinking rather than hitting the city right at the start of the night, I'll go home, have a sleep and wake at 2 or 3am and make my way in, hoping the crowds won't be so full-on.
