Photo Shoot

After making a reconnaissance trip for us Neil has come up with a fantastic plan for our beach shoot, we'll visit several locations.

Meet at Blowhole Track parking lot, Flinders at 1400 to 1430. A suggestion is to have a bite to eat and a toilet stop in Flinders as there are no toilets at Blowhole/Elephant Rock.
To find Blowhole Tk, leave Flinders going towards Melbourne, i.e. the road that was used for driving into Flinders. After the Flinders town sign, there is a valley in the road. The dirt track to the Blowhole is on the left shortly after the valley. Arrival time at the Blowhole is shortly after high tide. Even from the lookout at the carpark, there are spectacular rock and seascapes with waves crashing into Elephant Rock.  There is an easy track down to the beach on the left side of Elephant Rock. Very interesting rock shapes.

The other two locations are: 16th Beach (Rye - Blairgowrie Back beach). Entrance to the carpark is opposite Marcia Ave., Browns Rd. Access to the beach is an easy, short  walk. St Pauls Beach (just before Sorrento back beach). Note: There is no access to the actual beach at St Pauls following a huge cliff collapse that demolished the arch and most of the rock structures near it. This seascape is very picturesque and some good photos can be taken from the top lookout. Access to St Pauls Beach is from Melbourne Rd, near Sorrento back beach.

It is likely that St Pauls beach will be the second location (there is generally no mobile phone reception at this beach), and late afternoon, sunset and twilight will be 16th Beach. NOTE: There are no toilets or food outlets at any of these locations. There is a good takeaway on St Pauls Rd (instead of turning to the beach, turn the opposite direction and it is near the corner with Melbourne Rd. Also, there are plenty of food outlets in Sorrento.

St Pauls Beach has space for about 6 cars. 16th beach carpark is pretty rough. Carpooling is encouraged.

Equipment suggested:

Camera A lens that covers a reasonable wide angle. When I’ve been to these locations I’ve shot with a 24 - 120 mm zoom. I also, took a 16 - 35 mm. A sturdy tripod. If your tripod is not very stable, a bag (supermarket bag) of sand/rocks can be hung from the centre. A possibly better idea is to be friendly to a member that has a super tripod and do some sharing when low shutter speed photos are being taken.

Neutral Density (ND) filter. My ND filter has a diameter of 77mm. If other members have a 77mm screw diameter for their lens, I can show you how to use a ND filter for really slow shutter speed photos (the other option is a step down ring from the ND filter to a lower diameter front screw diameter). Also, there are a number of members with ND filters. I’m sure other members will let less experienced members try other diameter ND filters. A cable release is very useful. The alternate is to use to timer on your camera.

Plastic bag to protect your camera and lens from salt spray. The level of spray at the Blowhole can be really high when the wind is blowing off the sea. Insect repellent is a must at all of these locations. Early February there was almost plague proportions of Marsh flies.

Goals:

Capturing spectacular seascapes, rock formations, and waves. Use of Neutral Density (ND) filter. I always use a 9-stop ND filter, which allows a slow shutter speed to capture wave movement as a milky, misty effect. Sunset Twilight to capture the beautiful muted colours Note: There is an option to do the complete plan, but individuals can do part of the photoshoots

Hope (pray) for good weather and interesting cloud formations.

Safety:

Keep an eye of what the waves are doing. Don’t turn your back on the surf, especially at the Blowhole. Special care needs to be taken when clambering over rocks. Also, rocks with water and especially with seaweed cover can be slippery.
