Cancelled: Mornington Peninsular Shoot

When
20th July, 2024 – 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Category
Photo Shoot

Due to unfavourable forecast for this weekend we’ve decided to postpone this event.

We're venturing down to Mornington Peninsular, bring along your camera gear including your tripod and ND or graduated filters if you have them.

We're making this a bit of a later start so we can stick around and hopefully capture a stunning sunset.

High tide of 1.5 m is at 11:25 am and low tide of 1.1 m is at 4:00 pm on the 20th July. Astro is not an option as the moon is 98% and rises at 3:47pm.

Start at Sorrento Ocean Beach (Ocean Beach Rd, Sorrento) at 1:00pm.

There are plenty of lunch options in Sorrento and there is a cafe at the beach. Sorrento Ocean Beach has a large car park and easy access to the beach. At 2:30pm some of the rocky shelves and rock pools may be visible. Even at highish tide, rocks on the western side can be used in photos.

Travel to  Koonya Beach Ocean Beach (Hughes Rd, Blairgowrie) before Golden Hr at 4:45pm.

Sunset is at 5:25pm. Interesting photos of Koonya beach and surrounds can be taken from the reasonable sized carpark and there are a number of rock formations on the beach. This location is popular with people who photograph or monitor whale movements. The sun sets close to the spit on the western side of the beach. However, reverse sunset photos are often more spectacular with late afternoon lighting.

Blue hour starts at 5:43pm; often impressive photos can be captured.

Members with good mobility could go to  Diamond Bay (Diamond Bay Rd) and then use the coastal track to Bay of Islands. If members stay for blue hour, have a head lamp or torch as this area has no lighting.

Equipment to bring

  • Camera and wide angle to medium length of ~200mm lens
  • Tripod
  • Neutral density (ND) filter, and Polarising (circular) filter if you have them. I have 72mm and 77mm ND and Polariser filters, which Landscape Interest Group members can use if their lenses suit these front diameters.
  • Headlamp or torch if you are staying for Blue Hour as there is no lighting on the beach trails.

This photoshoot was planned by Ian Street and Neil Anderson.
